I’m so proud of you senlinyu. I’ve been there when Manacled was a WIP, and what a journey your fic has been through. Thank you for giving us a chance to support you as an artist.

PS: The name changes Helena (play on helen of troy.. mother to Hermione) and Ferron I assume is for ferret. This is me grasping on nothing. Hahaha.

I can’t convey how much Manacled meant to me as reader or how inspiring it was to me as a writer, but I can support you in any and every endeavor you may find yourself participating in. You have an audience ready to follow wherever your words lead. You deserve nothing but success.

I'm so happy for you! Such a great news! I'm so excited and can't wait to read this reimagination of Manacled!! Manacled means so much to me as a reader, and it has always held a very special place in my heart. (And always will). I've loved it dearly for years. Now, to have this opportunity to support you as a published author and artist is amazing. Thank you for sharing this great news with us!

So wait, you thought that in order to 'preserve' to quote you, "the incredible community that shares fanfiction freely" that you would plan over a span of YEARS to undermine access to free transformative fanwork to the public by getting a book deal using said transformative fanwork, its readership and widespread recognition as a lure to publishers whom, as you say 'both my publishing teams are familiar with Manacled' and they 'reached out to me'. At the same time, even when people were illegally selling bound copies, you kept Manacled posted (keeping it in the zeitgeist) so that you could 're-imagine' A.K.A. 'transform' it into something publishable, only to be set to take it down a year before you publish the modified version for profit?

If this is a matter of protecting the community, it makes no sense. If Alchemised is truly a different work and not a fanfiction, then Manacled as a fanfiction is protected, legally, and, conversely, so is Alchemised.

Unless you're planning on suing yourself (a case you would lose) taking Manacled down (even with advance notice) doesn't make any sense because as you have stated, the WORLD of Alchemised and the structure, characters, etc., are different. It's not the same work. This decision and announcement are completely antithetical to the allied image you're attempting to make happen, here, in regard to the fanfiction community.

Specifically considering the Harry Potter Fanfiction community, this is dually devastating as the persons who have connected deeply, with, and participated in sharing their love, for, the world and its characters have already suffered hits from the original series' author going from an early supporter of free transformative works to a biggot who has turned her back on them.

Truly, who was telling you that having Manacled up for free access was going to be a problem? --The people who are aspiring to make money off of you? None of it is sensical. The individuals who were going to read your own published work were going to read it, anyway, (look at the comments saying it) and the people who wouldn't would read Manacled instead because THAT'S the story they want to read-- a fanfiction written like a weekly series, not a giant novel set in an unfamiliar world. That's the point of fanfiction.

Keeping Manacled up whilst having your own published work also protects fanfiction more because it defends/supports the understanding that there is a distinction between transformative fanworks and wholly original works. If you take Manacled down in order to release Alchemised, doesn't that betray that Alchemised isn't its own, unique work? Wouldn't that give more credence to, say, JK Rowling, to sue? If not, what is the real purpose of all this? They are either two separate works or not. You can't have it both ways.

Manacled never needs(ed) to be taken down because of legal reasons--it is a transformative work not made for profit--it is being taken down for greed by publishers who would see it as a potential* risk to their profit margin (which as stated earlier, doesn't make any sense because it neither factually nor legally, is a threat).

Your writing is incredibly strong and your fully-developed, separate-from-fanfiction works deserve to be published and supported, but using fanfics (even your own) as a slow-onset pipeline to be put behind your own personal paywall at a later date and saying that protects free work is a slap in the face to the community of people who supported you and the many of whom who support you, still.

Somehow, 'I'm taking this down so that I can sell you something similar but not the same in the spirit of keeping things free' rings disingenuous.
